BBC Radio Merseyside presenter Roger Phillips has been awarded the Radio Academy Life Achievement Award at the Radio Festival 2011 in Salford.

Phillips, who began presenting on the Liverpool-based station in the late 1970s, said he was "delighted and surprised" with the award.

The citation called him "a champion of the city and area in the darkest times of the 1980s".

He presents the station's weekday lunchtime phone-in programme.

Earlier at the festival he challenged BBC Director General Mark Thompson about cuts to BBC Local Radio budgets.
