More than 400 homes and businesses in Wirral have now been without gas supplies for six days after a pipe was damaged by a burst water main.

Water entered the gas network after a burst at the junction of Hoylake Road and Danger Lane.

More than 2,000 homes in Moreton and Leasowe suffered problems, with gas supplies shut off while engineers extracted the water.

A National Grid spokesperson said 418 properties were still affected.

The firm said the majority of affected homes had now had their gas switched back on.

They added that about 200,000 litres of water had been pumped from the pipes at the weekend.

Some homes in the area also suffered an electrical blackout on Sunday, after a surge in demand overwhelmed the local network.
