An 81-year-old woman who admitted causing the death of a pensioner by dangerous driving has been given a suspended jail sentence.

Margaret Shaw, of Church Road, Litherland, Merseyside, was sentenced to 12 months, suspended for two years at Liverpool Crown Court.

Veronica Johnston, 80, died after being hit by Shaw's Renault Clio on 10 March when it mounted the pavement in Walton.

Shaw was also banned from driving for five years.

The judge told her she would also have to undergo an extended re-test to get her licence back after the disqualification period.

The court heard Mrs Johnston's daughter, Ann Bolger, 51, was also hit by the car on Hale Road and suffered serious leg injuries.
