Wirral house fire 'caused by lightning'

A fire at a Merseyside house is believed to have been started by a lightning strike, firefighters said.

Police alerted Merseyside Fire Service to the blaze at a large detached house in Meols Drive, the A540, in Hoylake just after 01:00 GMT.

A fire service spokesman said the fire was in the first floor and roof space and had severely damaged the house.

The detached property, which backs on to Royal Liverpool Golf Course, was empty at the time.

Four fire engines tackled the fire at its height and Meols Drive was closed but it has since reopened.
