A husband is "extremely relieved" to be reunited with his wedding ring after he lost it in the Mersey Tunnel.

The owner came forward to claim the ring which was spotted by an eagle-eyed toll inspector in the coin reject slot of the toll payment machines.

A Merseytravel spokesman said: "The man was extremely relieved and grateful when he collected the ring.

"He doesn't want to be named though to save him the embarrassment of telling his wife that he lost the ring."

Merseyside Travel launched an appeal for the owner of the ring which has an inscription that partly reads "Until I die".
