Stone thrown at car from bridge on M56 near Frodsham

A car travelling on the M56 in Cheshire has been hit by a stone thrown from a bridge, in what police said could have been a "devastating" incident.

The Honda Civic was damaged by the stone which was thrown at traffic from the Weaver footbridge over the motorway between Frodsham and Helsby, at about 16:45 GMT on Thursday.

Nobody was injured in the incident.

A Cheshire Police spokeswoman said a group of youths was seen on the bridge at the time the stone was thrown.

PC Dave Walton said: "Fortunately, nobody was hurt as a result of this incident, but the consequences could have been devastating.

"I would remind young people of this as they may not realise that what they perceive as mischief could result in serious injury, or death.

"I would also ask parents to make sure that they know where their youngsters are and what they are doing."
