Birkenhead man hurt in 'vicious' street attack

A 37-year-old man has been left with "life-changing" injuries after he was attacked by a group of men on a street in Birkenhead.

The man was walking along Singleton Avenue at about 04:40 GMT when he was assaulted, a Merseyside Police spokeswoman said.

He was taken to hospital with damage to his eye and facial injuries. His condition is described as stable.

Det Chief Insp Dave McCaughrean said it was a "particularly vicious attack".

Police are studying CCTV footage and have carried out house-to-house inquiries in the area.

Mr McCaughrean said: "We are keen to speak to anyone who may have seen anything, no matter how insignificant it might seem in case they have vital information for this investigation.

"This assault has left a man seriously injured in hospital with life-changing injuries and I would urge anyone who knows who is responsible to come forward."
