A police officer had to be cut free from his patrol car after it crashed outside a Liverpool police station.

The officer's vehicle collided with another car at about 09:45 GMT, by Walton Lane police station.

Firefighters rescued him and he was taken to hospital. The extent of his injuries are still being assessed, a spokeswoman for Merseyside Police said.

The driver of the other car was described as "walking wounded".

The city-bound carriageway of Walton Lane was closed for several hours but has since reopened.
