Wirral dog walkers rescued from fog on Dee estuary

A father and son have been taken to hospital suffering from severe hypothermia after they got lost in fog on the River Dee estuary.

The walkers, who were accompanied by a dog, were found up to their waists in water after a three hour search.

Liverpool Coastguard said the walkers made a 999 call from a mobile phone after they became disorientated in thick fog on sands near Hilbre Island.

They were found by the crew of the West Kirkby lifeboat at about 20:00 GMT.
