A 22-year-old man has been arrested following an attack on a 42-year-old man in Wirral which left him in a critical condition.

An 18-year-old man, two 13-year-olds and a 12-year-old also arrested after the incident in Rock Ferry, have been released on bail.

The man was punched to the ground near Old Chester Road on Monday evening.

He is thought to have had a row with a group of youths when a second man intervened and punched him.

He hit his head and remains in a critical condition at The Walton Centre for Neurology and Neurosurgery.

Police have appealed to any youths involved in the argument to contact them.

Det Insp Mark Tivendale said Old Chester Road was "a busy road and there will have been a lot of people around, in cars and on foot at the time of the assault".

"I would appeal to anyone who was in the area or who has information to come forward," he said.
