Three men arrested over an attack on a New Zealand rugby league player at a bar in Merseyside have been released on bail, police have said.

St Helens' Sia Soliola required hospital treatment after being found by police outside Imperial Bar on Ormskirk Street in the early hours of Monday.

He had serious facial injuries.

A 23-year-old man from Lymm, Cheshire, a 24-year-old man from Chester and a 32-year-old from Speke, Liverpool, have been bailed pending further enquiries.

It is not yet known whether the injuries will keep the centre from playing against Bradford Bulls on Saturday.

The Kiwi international has been a regular for the Saints in the 2012 season and played in Friday's home defeat by Hull FC.
