Hybrid electric buses and 'transport hub' to be introduced

A new "transport hub" is to be created for bus services in Southport and hybrid electric buses introduced on River Mersey tunnel services.

The changes will be paid for with £5m from the Better Bus Area Fund.

Southport's bus interchange facilities will be improved with new stops and shelters built, including real time information screens.

The double-decker hybrid electric buses, operated by Arriva, will be fitted with leather seats and wi-fi.

There will also be improvements to a waiting area for patients at Wirral's Arrowe Park Hospital and a mobile phone app developed to provide public transport information.

Bus stops in Crosby and Heswall will also be improved with information screens added to some routes.

Jim Barclay, Merseytravel interim chief executive, said: "The funding is a real boost in our bid to encourage people across Merseyside to leave their cars at home and switch to sustainable travel, whilst the existing passengers will also benefit from the improved facilities and increase in real time information provision."
