A man has been jailed for a "shocking and upsetting" attack outside a Liverpool nightclub which saw him bite off another man's nose, ears and lip.

Laurence McGinn, 29, from Liverpool, was sentenced to eight years at Liverpool Crown Court for the attack outside Funky Box in August.

McGinn's victim required extensive hospital treatment for his injuries.

Det Ch Insp Tracy Hayes said the injuries had been "some of the worst many officers will have ever seen".

She said the level of violence shown by McGinn had been "truly disgraceful".

"It has left the victim with both ears needing to be reconstructed by surgery and emotional scars which he may never recover from," she said.

"Both McGinn and his victim had been drinking heavily well into the early hours and it was 6am on a weekday morning that the fight occurred in a busy city centre street.

"It will have been incredibly shocking and upsetting for people beginning a normal working day to witness such violence and we are pleased that McGinn will not be able to do something like this again for a considerable amount of time."
