A woman was rescued by dinghy from her car trapped in rising floodwater due to heavy rain in Merseyside.

The 45-year-old was spotted in the Citroen by a passer-by in Peasley Cross Lane, St Helens, at 14:50 BST on Tuesday.

When fire crews arrived water had risen to the car's windows and the woman was helped on to its roof before being taken to safety in an inflatable raft.

About 165ft (50m) of the surrounding area was flooded.

The woman was checked by paramedics from the North West Ambulance Service but was unharmed.
