A 21-year-old man has been jailed for seven years for raping a prostitute in Manchester city centre.

Jason Edwards, of no fixed abode, was found guilty following a trial at Manchester Crown Court.

He took the 39-year-old woman to Helmet Street, where he hit her head on the floor and raped her before running off.

Det Con Matthew Bolger said: "He thought because of the industry the victim worked in he could do whatever he wanted and get away with it."

The detective added: "No-one should be put through an ordeal like this and she was left with cuts and bruises to her face and body."

Edwards picked the woman up on 13 October 2010 at the junction of Fairfield Street and St Andrews Street and wanted to take her to a wooded area, but she refused and suggested Helmet Street, police said.

He was arrested after blood found on his trainers matched that of the victim.

Edwards must also serve a further three years on licence and sign the sex offenders register for life.
