Man critical after shooting in Merseyside street

A man is in a critical condition in hospital after being shot in a Merseyside street.

The victim, believed to be in his 20s, was found after police were called to reports of a shooting in Woolton Road, Wavertree, at 17:30 GMT.

Woolton Road and Beauclair Drive have been cordoned off for forensic examination and police have stepped up patrols in the area.

Merseyside Police said the attack is thought to have been targeted.

It is the latest in a series of shootings in the city. Detectives have said there is an acute gun-crime problem.
