A man is in a critical condition in hospital after he was assaulted in the early hours of the morning in Liverpool city centre.

The 26-year-old, who is from Ireland, was found with head injuries in Sir Thomas Street at about 04:00 GMT.

He was taken to hospital, where he remains in a "critical but stable condition" and is being assessed.

Merseyside Police said a 19-year-old man from Garston, Liverpool, has been arrested on suspicion of assault.

Officers have appealed for witnesses to an altercation between several men in nearby Victoria Street around the time of the attack to contact them.
