A woman has been killed in a fall of about 80ft (24m) from the third floor of a clothes store in Liverpool.

Police said Susan Wood, 57, from Kirkby was found at the bottom of escalators on the ground floor of the Church Street Primark at 18:00 BST on Tuesday.

She had been seen moments before at a balcony next to the third-floor escalators.

Police said the death was not being treated as suspicious. The coroner has been informed.

She was treated by a doctor at the scene but was pronounced dead later at the Royal Liverpool Hospital.

An North West Ambulance Service spokeswoman said the drop from the third-floor escalators was about 80ft.

Liverpool City Council, which has health and safety responsibilities for the city's shops, said it was waiting for the results of police inquiries before deciding whether to investigate.

Primark has not been available for comment.

A post-mortem examination is due to be carried out later.

Five years ago, at the same store, a three-year-old girl fell through a gap between the escalators to the lower ground floor while travelling up to the third floor with her family.

She broke her left leg and arm and suffered internal injuries but survived.
