A hospital's accident and emergency unit had to be shut to patients because of flash flooding.

Wirral University Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust said the adjoining all-day health centre at Arrowe Park Hospital was also affected earlier. Both have since reopened.

Elsewhere in Merseyside, a house was struck twice by lightning in St Helens.

The chimney of the house in Patterdale Drive, Portico, was damaged.

Merseyside Fire Service said firefighters were called to a blaze at the house, which saw the chimney damaged externally and inside the house.

Contractors have been assessing the damage at Arrowe Park Hospital.

Ambulance admissions were redirected to neighbouring accident and emergency departments while the flooding was contained.
