Virgin train driver gets electric shock on Runcorn railway

A train driver received an electric shock after overhead power cables fell on to the track, causing long delays.

The Virgin Trains driver was taken to hospital after the incident, which happened in Runcorn, Cheshire, at about 19:30 BST on Tuesday.

He was injured after stopping the train and getting out to check for a marker on the track, in order to report his location.

His condition is described as "poorly but stable".

The accident caused disruptions to services between London Euston and Liverpool Lime Street until midnight. Coaches arrived to evacuate passengers from the scene.
