Two people have died in a four-vehicle crash which closed a motorway and caused long delays in Cheshire.

The accident happened on the M56 near Runcorn, at about 12.00 BST, involving a bus, two lorries and a car.

Fire crews spent more than two hours trying to free the casualties as ambulance staff and motorway police also attended.

The bus was not carrying any passengers. Motorists have been advised to avoid the area.

The westbound carriageway was reopened at about 14.00, and a spokesman for Cheshire Constabulary said the eastbound carriageway between junction 14 at Hapsford and junction 12 at Runcorn could be reopened soon.
