A man has been critically injured after being shot several times in a "brazen targeted attack" outside his home, Merseyside Police have said.

Police said the 29-year-old victim was shot in the stomach on Monfa Road, Bootle at 15:45 BST on Monday.

Two men pulled up to the victim's house on a scrambler motorbike, police said, before the passenger climbed off and opened fire.

The man had surgery overnight and remains in a "critical" condition.

He also suffered injuries to his thigh in the attack.

'Extremely reckless'

Supt Claire Richards of Merseyside Police said the victim was outside his property with two men when the assailants approached on their motorbike.

After the attack, they rode off towards Province Road and Hawthorne Road.

She appealed for anyone with information on the shooting or who saw the bike in the area to contact the force.

She said: "This was a brazen and extremely reckless attack carried out in broad daylight in an area where many people live.

"It has left one man in a critical condition in hospital and could have resulted in innocent bystanders being hurt."
