Former Knowsley South MP Eddie O'Hara dies aged 78

A former MP who served his Merseyside constituency for 20 years has died aged 78.

Eddie O'Hara was the former Labour MP for Knowsley South, winning a by-election in 1990 after the death of sitting MP Sean Hughes.

The Bootle-born former university lecturer was MP for 20 years until the seat was abolished in boundary changes.

Labour MP for St Helens South and Whiston Marie Rimmer said: "Very sad to hear of the passing of my dear friend."

Her tweet added: "My thoughts and prayers are with his family."

After leaving Parliament Mr O'Hara became involved in the campaign to restore the Elgin Marbles to Greece, becoming chairman of the British Committee for the Reunification of the Parthenon Marbles (BCRPM).
