A scrambler bike rider has died after being seriously injured in a crash in south Liverpool.

Ben Phillips, 17, from Belle Vale, died in hospital after crashing with a Hyundai car at the junction of Belle Vale Road and Lee Vale Road at about 19:10 BST on Thursday.

Police said the rider was not wearing a helmet or other protective clothing.

The car driver was uninjured and assisted with inquiries. Police are appealing for witnesses.

Insp Keith Kellet said "off-road motorbikes should not be ridden on the road" and riders need to "make sure they have the appropriate equipment".

Belle Vale Road was closed between Beresford Road and Halewood Road for several hours following the crash.
