Five people have been arrested during raids in Merseyside as part of an operation targeting scrambler bikes linked with organised crime.

Eleven bikes were seized from 15 properties in Huyton, St Helens and Wirral following searches which began at 05:30 BST.

Police said Operation Brookdale was in response to "community information".

A 17-year-old scrambler bike rider died after being seriously injured in a crash in south Liverpool on Friday.

Operation Brookdale will also see patrols increased and a helicopter monitor the movements of bikes, Merseyside Police said.

Supt Jenny Sims said: "We understand the frustration and worry people feel when they see reckless behaviour of off-road bikes.

"They pose a danger to pedestrians and other road users and the consequences of their illegal use can devastate families."
