An unexploded wartime shell has been found on a construction site in Liverpool.

It was discovered by workers digging up the southbound carriageway of the Knowsley Expressway at the junction with Speke Road at about 11:30 BST.

Bomb disposal experts attended and police temporarily closed the road from Tarbock Island, where it meets the M57, down to its junction with Speke Road.

Police said the device was removed and the road reopened at about 15:00.
