A 52-year-old man has been attacked with an axe in a pub.

It happened shortly before 15:20 BST at The Queens on Knowsley Road, Bootle in Merseyside, said police.

The victim is being treated in hospital for back injuries that are not thought to be life-threatening, police said.

The attacker fled and was driven away in a white Mercedes Sprinter van. The vehicle was later recovered by police and a man has been arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender.

Merseyside Police said an investigation was under way, with an area of the pub cordoned off for examination and "CCTV opportunities are being explored".

Detectives have appealed for anyone with information to contact them.
