MPs lobby minister over incinerator plan for Norfolk

Two Norfolk MPs concerned at plans for a waste incinerator on the outskirts of King's Lynn are to meet the environment secretary Caroline Spelman.

The plans for the plant at Saddlebow have been given the go-ahead by Norfolk County Council despite 93% of those who took part in a referendum opposing it.

North West Norfolk MP Henry Bellingham and South West Norfolk MP Elizabeth Truss will meet Ms Spelman on 16 May.

Ms Truss said the views of 65,000 residents should be respected.

"I will ensure that the Secretary of State understands exactly what the people of South West Norfolk want," she said.

The £500m incinerator contract is due to be signed with Anglo-American company Cory Wheelabrator if it is ratified at a county council scrutiny committee meeting in May.

The council said the plans would stop rubbish going to landfill and generate energy.

Opponents have said they are worried about pollution.
