A father has told a court how he heard screams for help moments before his teenage son drowned in a Norfolk broad.

Zabullah Assardi, 15, from Staffordshire, died in Whitlingham Broad, near Norwich, in August 2008.

Norfolk County Council is being prosecuted by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) for breaching regulations.

Khalidad Assardi told Norwich Crown Court he had not seen any signs warning of dangers in the water.

The family was having a barbecue when Zabullah got into difficulty while swimming.

Mr Assardi said he heard his son screaming before disappearing under the surface.

He told the court how he would have gone into the water himself, but could not leave other members of his family upset on the bank.

The case is expected to continue for another fortnight.
