Super-sized Roquette silo arrives in Corby

A giant silo, the size of two double-decker buses, has arrived in Northamptonshire after a "challenging" journey from Lincolnshire.

Roquette UK, which employs 150 people in Corby, was granted permission to transport the silo 75 miles (120km) by road to Weldon Industrial Estate.

Street signs were removed along the way to allow the silo and police escort to pass through narrow village streets.

The silo will hold 250 tonnes of pellets used in making animal feed.

It weighs 30 tonnes, more than twice as much as the Big Ben bell, and could contain 15 Minis.

Stuart Lang, process engineering manager at Roquette UK Ltd, was with the silo as it made its journey from Sutton Bridge to Corby.

He said: "We chose a Sunday to do it and the best route to minimise disruption but it still had its difficult moments, particularly around tight corners and passing low level trees."
