Sir Brandon Gough, chancellor at the University of East Anglia, has died at the age of 74.

The university, where he had been chancellor since 2003, said it was "profoundly shocked and saddened" to hear of Sir Brandon's "sudden death".

Vice-chancellor Prof Edward Action said he was "devastated" and said the ex-chairman of Yorkshire Water had worked "tirelessly" for the university.

He is survived by wife Sarah and a number of children and grandchildren.

He was knighted for his public service in 2002.
