Mystery of shopper found injured in Bedford

A 26-year-old man has been found with severe head injuries minutes after leaving a Tesco store in Bedford.

The Polish man left the Cardington Road store with his shopping at 1941 BST on Saturday night.

A woman passing by found him 15 minutes later lying on the ground in a lay-by near the shopping complex.

He is now at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge where his condition is described as "critical". Police said it was not clear how he became injured.

Officers have urged any witnesses to come forward.

They said they especially wanted to speak to the woman who stopped and tried to help but failed to leave any details of her identity with the ambulance crew who attended the scene.

Police said they knew the man lived locally and had clingfilm around a new tattoo on his arm.

He was wearing a T-shirt and combat trousers when he was found.
