Electric blanket checks in Northamptonshire show faults
Trading standards officers who checked 352 electric blankets across Northamptonshire discovered that 68% of them were faulty or even dangerous.
County council staff teamed up with Age UK to invite residents to bring blankets in for routine safety checks.
Of blankets tested 239 failed and their owners given replacements for free.
"The most common fault was due to the age of the blankets, which meant they didn't comply with current standards," a spokesman said.
Cabinet member for customers and communities Andre Gonzalez de Savage said: "We held a week-long series of sessions in locations across the county.
"Once again it has proved a big success and highlights the need to continue with such a widespread safety campaign.
"If these blankets had caught fire, they could have had potentially tragic consequences for their owners."
