Six taxis taken off road in Northampton clampdown
Six cars have been taken off the road after a surprise safety check on taxis and private hire vehicles in Northampton.
Northampton council officers and the police inspected 22 vehicles.
Four private hire vehicles and two Hackney carriage cars were immediately taken off the road as they failed to meet the council's safety standards.
They included some cars with defective tyres, and one for having no brake lights, a council spokesman said.
During the operation on 24 September five other drivers were given advice with regard to lighting defects and tyres with tread nearing the legal limit.
Drivers were permitted to rectify these defects on site and then allowed to continue.
Six private hire vehicles and two Hackney vehicles were found to be in a roadworthy condition and given a "clean bill of health".
