Northamptonshire council's Big Society Sweden trip

A delegation from Northamptonshire has travelled to Sweden to see what the Big Society project could learn from the Scandinavian country.

A senior county councillor described the trip as a "great opportunity to see how things work over there".

David Mackintosh, the member for community services, has been asked by the cabinet office of the UK government to compile a report on the trip.

The fact-finding mission is financed through the European Social Fund.

The visit takes in the offices of the Swedish Prime Minister, the national parliament and a tour of the capital's city hall.

Mr Mackintosh said: "Sweden has been moving towards a more decentralised system of government for a number of years now so this is a great opportunity to see how things work over there.

"The Big Society concept strongly mirrors this system and it will be interesting to see how this could work in the UK in a practical sense."

Northamptonshire County Council and Northampton University representatives are on the trip to Stockholm.
