Northampton garage blast damages eight homes

Eight homes were damaged after a car repair garage in Northampton caught fire and gas cylinders exploded.

Crews were called to the EWX Automotive workshop in Cecil Road, off Kingsthorpe Grove, early on Friday.

Two houses were seriously damaged by fire while six suffered blast damage. Six gardens were also affected by the fire and explosion.

A 200m (220yd) cordon was put in place and 150 local residents were moved to nearby church rooms.

At its height, about 40 firefighters were tackling the fire. An investigation into what caused it will take place later.

Most residents have now been allowed back to their homes.
