Northampton's bus station to be replaced

Funding has been agreed to replace Northampton bus station as part of a multi-million pound redevelopment of the town centre.

The West Northamptonshire Development Corporation (WNDC) has allotted £4m to buy out the current lease on the existing Greyfriars Bus Station, which is held by Stagecoach.

The Grosvenor Shopping Centre is to be extended as part of the project.

The brick-and-concrete station building was once described by eminent architect George Ferguson as resembling the "jaws of hell".

A further £4m will go towards building the new station, which will be located on the old Fishmarket site.
