Wellingborough shop offers money to catch shoplifters

A shop in Northamptonshire is offering money to people who help identify thieves who steal from the store.

The O2 phone shop, on Market Street in Wellingborough, has put up pictures of shoplifters and has asked the public to "name and shame" them for £200 cash.

Shop manager Mark Jones said: "We lose £500 a month through shoplifting, which is a part-time job for somebody."

Northamptonshire Police said it was concerned that the scheme could jeopardise the formal legal process.

Mr Jones, who is also the chair of Wellingborough Traders Group, said the group was working with the police and the money would only be given if the information leads to a successful conviction.

Northamptonshire Police said it found out about the scheme a few days ago.

Ch Insp Gary Ashton said: "We want to sit down and work through the details with Wellingborough Traders Group, just so that we understand what the risks and issues are."
