Boats facing lock closures on Northamptonshire canals

Sections of the Grand Union Canal in Northamptonshire are to close until further notice due to the current drought.

British Waterways said locks 1-17 of the Northampton Arm of the canal will be shut from Friday 13 April.

And locks at the Stoke Bruene section of the Grand Union Canal will only be open from 10:00 to 15:00 BST daily.

"Every lock movement takes up around 50,000 gallons of water," said Jeff Whyatt from British Waterways.

The prolonged dry spell has been blamed for the situation.

British Waterways said certain locks in the county would open at peak times during Bank Holidays.

Tim Coghlan from Braunston Marina said: "I've never known things being so restricted in my 22 years in the business, but I think it is the right move.

"I think it's best to do it all upfront now before things get worse."

British Waterways said the restrictions will be reviewed throughout the season and will be adjusted where appropriate especially at peak times like bank Holiday weekends
