Rushden post office hit by ram-raiders

Ram-raiders who drove a stolen rental car into a Northamptonshire post office made off with a "significant" amount of money, police have said.

The Vauxhall Astra smashed through the doors of Wilkinsons in Eaton Walk, Rushden, at 01:20 GMT on Wednesday.

It was then driven towards a cash machine inside. Four offenders left the scene and abandoned the car.

The vehicle had been stolen from Avis car rental earlier. The post office is expected to be closed on Thursday.

Police said it was the third ram-raid in the county this year.

Three 4x4 Range Rovers were stolen from a business that was ram-raided in Baird Road in Corby on 24 January.

On 19 March, the HSBC bank in Thrapston was ram-raided with a cherry picker. The branch has since closed.

A spokeswoman for Northamptonshire Police said it was too early in the investigation to the latest raid with any other offences.
