New medical centre to open in Northamptonshire

A new medical centre will be built on the site of a Northamptonshire pub that was destroyed by fire.

Plans for a new practice and pharmacy on the site of the Eagle Pub in Olympic Way has been approved by Wellingborough's planning committee.

The new centre will replace the neighbouring Queensway Medical Practice which was built for temporary use in the 1960s.

The Eagle pub was demolished last summer following the fire in 2009.

Labour Councillor Andrew Scarborough, who sits on Wellingborough council's planning committee, welcomed the decision.

He said: "The doctors have been saying for some time they need better premises and it's great that there is space right next to the existing centre."

It is estimated the project will create about 12 new jobs over a decade.
