Final daily editions of Northamptonshire papers published

The final daily editions of two of Northamptonshire's newspapers have been published.

The Northampton Chronicle and Echo and the Evening Telegraph will now publish weekly editions from Thursday.

The owner Johnston Press said the switch was part of a relaunch of both papers which it announced in April.

The publisher said it was moving towards digital media and was hoping to provide daily news through an online service.

David Summers, editor of the Northampton Chronicle, said: "We are changing because people are getting their news differently now. Times have changed and audience demand has changed."

Northampton Chronicle and Echo recently launched an iPad app offering its premium services.

However Louise Mensch, Conservative MP for Corby said she believed newspapers played a vital role in the community and could not be replaced by an app.

"Tablets and computers are expensive and exclude a lot people on low incomes and some of the elderly population, who need their local newspaper to get local news."
