Call for Northampton to Bedford rail link to re-open

A rail group has called for the re-opening of the line between Northampton and Bedford.

The branch of the Midland Railway has not been used for nearly 50 years but supporters believe it would improve connections with towns in the region.

The Milton Keynes Rail Link Supporters Forum, which supports the plan, held a meeting on Tuesday.

It has pledged to organise a series of forums with a view to protecting the possible future development of the Northampton to Bedford line.

But the Northampton Rail Users' Group (NRUG) said it was not convinced the plans were practical in the current economic climate

Paul Minton, from the NRUG, said: "In Northampton we are heavily geared towards getting the new station and having faster trains to Birmingham.

"I think we need to be careful that it does not become the new latest thing and be a distraction to the other things we are trying to achieve."
