Think Environmental fined £33,000 for bad smells

A waste firm in Northamptonshire has been fined £33,000 for causing bad odours around its processing plant.

Think Environmental converts waste into energy at Blackbridge Farm near Burton Latimer.

The company pleaded guilty to failing to ensure that emissions were free from odours between April 2010 and July 2011, after more than 300 complaints.

At Wellingborough Magistrates' Court, the firm was also ordered to pay costs of £15,000.

Think Environmental was trying to use new technology to turn household and commercial waste into energy, but the company admitted in court that the process did not work.

Environment Agency officials took the company to court after receiving complaints about smells described by residents as "nauseating and like rotting food".

The firm also pleaded guilty to failing to remove waste illegally buried in a nearby paddock.

Last year, Think Environmental made a loss of £2.6m.
