A man who raped and assaulted a woman in Northampton on Boxing Day has been jailed.

Gintas Burinskas, 36, of Victoria Road in the town, got an 11-year sentence at Northampton Crown Court after pleading guilty to rape and assault.

The court heard the attack took place in the early hours of 26 December, as the victim was walking alone near the town centre.

Northamptonshire police paid tribute to the "tremendous courage" of the victim.

During the attack Gintas raped her and injured her face. He was arrested nearby.

Det Con Paul Houghton-Graeger said: "We welcome the sentence today and would like to pay special thanks to the victim, who showed tremendous courage throughout this case."
