A "substantial" fire broke out overnight in a nut factory in Northamptonshire.

Fire crews were called to Quality Nut Products at Cavalry Hill Industrial Park, Weedon, near Daventry, shortly before 03:30 BST.

Northamptonshire Fire Service said the blaze was substantial but had been contained with little impact on nearby businesses and homes.

An investigation into the cause of the fire has begun.

Ninety firefighters tackled the blaze. Some are still at the scene damping down.

Damon Emery, 45, who lives nearby said he was woken at about 03:50 by a loud "crackling" noise from the fire.

The fire broke out in the early hours of Wednesday

"I said to my partner, 'Somebody's letting off fireworks'," he said. "I looked out of the window and there was a great big pall of smoke in the air.

"A friend of mine has just moved very close by, so I phoned and said, 'You'd better get out of your house'."

Mr Emery went to the scene for a closer look and said he got within about 150ft (45m) of the fire.

"There were fire engines already there and more were turning up to assist," he said.

Luke Hodson, of Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service, said people living nearby were warned to keep doors and windows closed.

"If the smell has got into your property just allow that to dissipate naturally," he said.

"We will have a presence here for a number of days and there will be a joint investigation into the cause of the fire."
