House of Fraser is to pull out of Northampton's Grosvenor Centre, putting more than 60 jobs at risk.

The company was unable to commit to a long-term lease, centre owner Legal & General Property said.

The firm said it was with "regret" it would be closing its flagship department store by March 2014.

The space will be taken over by Primark and Next in the next 18 months as part of a £3m redevelopment, a centre spokesman confirmed.

"Despite detailed negotiations with our landlords we were unfortunately unable to influence the outcome and the current property lease will come to an end early," a House of Fraser spokesman said.

"We have notified staff members and will make every effort to redeploy them within House of Fraser wherever possible. We will also be working with local businesses on this matter."

The new-look Grosvenor Centre is due to be completed in September 2014, subject to planning consent.

Simon Russian from Legal & General Property said both Primark and Next were willing to commit to the centre "for the long term".
