The death of a refuse collector killed by his own bin lorry is being investigated by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

Kane Beard, 22, from Daventry, was part of a four-strong crew working in the town's Ashby Road when the accident happened at about 09:45 BST on Friday.

Both the HSE and Northamptonshire Police are investigating the death of the "popular" binman.

'Deepest sympathies'

A minute's silence was held by the company and Daventry District Council at 11:00 in memory of Mr Beard.

Daventry District Council holds the waste services contract with Amey and described the 22-year-old's death as a "tragic incident".

Council chief executive Ian Vincent said the silence was "a mark of respect for Kane" who he described as "a popular member of our local community".

"Our thoughts and deepest sympathies remain with his family, friends and colleagues at this sad and difficult time," he said.

A number of floral tributes have been left close to the scene and any witnesses are being asked to contact local police.
