Nottingham University in Shanghai campus talks
The University of Nottingham has been invited by the government of Shanghai to establish a second campus in China.
Six years ago the university opened on a site in Ningbo, which currently has almost 5,000 students.
The new prospective campus would be about 140 miles away, in the southern part of Shanghai.
Discussions between the university and other parties, including government officials, are at an advanced stage, but a deal has not been finalised.
Professor Nick Miles, provost and chief executive officer, China, said: "We are not looking to duplicate The University of Nottingham Ningbo, China campus in Shanghai.
"We are aiming to attract a different set of students who want international qualifications in subjects we do not yet provide."
The Shanghai university campus is still subject to approval by the university's senate and council and the relevant authorities in China and the UK.
