A1 junction project goes to public inquiry

A £9.7m scheme to improve a junction on the A1 in Nottinghamshire has taken a step forward.

The project, to create a two-level junction and link roads at Elkesley, was put on hold due to a government review of transport spending.

Now it has been given permission to proceed to a public inquiry, which should begin in the summer.

Work, which would allow a 50mph speed limit to be lifted, could be completed by 2014.

Officials said the changes would improve safety and journey times.
